Am I going to get penalized for not having health insurace? How much?

I am a MA resident and my health insurance has lapsed probably for close to 12 months now, I was covered by my school but then last semester plus the summer before it I wasn't covered because I wasn't taking enough credits. I was unaware of my lack of health insurance untill recently and ever since I've been trying to get Masshealth since it is all I can afford. How much am I going to get penalized and is there any way to appeal these penalties??
